I've read a lot of articles about the mommy gap: women lose their place in their career tracks because they had children and left work for a few years; women get passed over for promotions because they may have children or, already having children, the promotion-givin dude assumes they can't put in the hours. Well it's ridiculous to assume that women should be able to pick right back up where they left off, isn't it? It's absurd to expect the same level of commitment and ambition from someone who just fuckin boosted for a year and then showed up again all "hey guyz baby wuz great!!!" Sure, but that particular work-life balance - that whole playbook - was written during the era of the single-earner family and the stay-at-home mom. There are no longer that many men nor women who enjoy the luxury of having a spouse whose does the laundry, cooks dinner, takes care of the kids, makes sure your keys are on top of the fridge so you can find them when you leave in the morning. Whatever other arguments we might have on the subject, we can all agree on this: that the American workplace is best suited to a man or a childless woman with a stay-at-home spouse. It was designed by dudes with stay-at-home spouses with the interests of dudes with stay-at-home spouses at heart. And then, just to kick it up a notch, some dudes with stay-at-home spouses got into a deregulatory mood and obliterated pensions, job security, union wages, and trade protectionism. This affects black people too, so stick with me! There are a lot of systems in America built with the interests of white people at heart. They were built by and for white people thinking white thoughts in white skins. Let's withhold all accusations of racism for the moment and just observe that it was pretty much all white people doing the building, and what were they supposed to do, guess???? Like with the workplace, the structural underworks of these systems are not immediately obvious, but one of them is the idea that the same stuff that educates white children well should work well for everyone. Bill Cosby wrote his doctoral thesis in and around the vicinity of this subject! That he got impatient later in life doesn't mean that we should forget about Fat Albert, one of the few major-league efforts to educate black children in a way systematically non-white. So that's part of the problem: black people ARE different and they DO live in a different world than white people. The jury is still out on whether this way is nature or nurture, but the difference exists. The problem of education is a problem created by having a white background: if we take white achievements, students, interests as normal - then deviant black behavior pops right out. But as I noted before, it's not like people are saying "white people have a problem: they achieve too much!" And black people DO have to achieve on the level of white people to make it in a world which is essentially... white. Just like women have to achieve on the level of men - who don't bleed, get pregnant, or have to wear pantyhose - in order to make it in a workplace which is essentially male. I dunno, this reply is getting really long. I'll outline the next couple of steps and if you REALLY want me to, I'll come back and extrapolate. 2. Another part of the problem: black internalization of The White Background a. Acting like whitey: it is a judgment like an immune system gone astray, defending too furiously against a complaint which is i. legitimate, as academic success in a white school within a white world must be considered ii. useless, as protecting this aspect of blackness causes trouble out of proportion with the amount of blackness it protects b. "Black" or "urban" culture: not really a culture of Fords and Einsteins, is it? i. Interesting: because guess what, the whole fuckin planet loves hip hop and gansta gear, just like they loved rock n roll once. ii. But it further locks down blackness: blackness is not rural or suburban, does not work a day job, and disdains to work within the system. Please see 2a. 3. The final problem chunk: why should anyone hand off power? a. Because white people worked hard for centuries to make our little white world all ours. What are black people bringing to the table that makes it worthwhile for us to share? b. Furthermore, not all white people are doing well. So why should black people be doing better? 4. Conclusion: there are two ways to make this problem less relevant, but no immediate and realistic ways to resolve it. a. More prosperity please: when the middle class got gutted, nobody took it in the ass quite like niggers did. The white system offers little enough to white people as it is, and the niggers have to work overtime just to bridge the initial cultural gap. It would be easier to make the white system work for black people if there were generally more good jobs, especially the kind that don't require any cultural gaps to be bridged: scientific, manufacturing, and industrial jobs, for example. More generally, a variety of underserved sectors of society would benefit from more money, jobs, and respect in technical areas - everything from sand casters to electronic engineers. b. Mommytracking negroes: whatever the differences are between white and black people, and no matter whether they are made or born, they need to be identified and understood before they can be accommodated. Or ignored. Maybe there isn't as much ground to cover as we assume; maybe a small gulf seems larger when cloaked in mystery and hysteria. If all it takes to make a white educational system functional for blacks is, you know, watermelon in the cafeteria and a History Of African Empires class, then I think we can make some progress. Representative changes, small concessions to particular tastes - these are cheap ways of making the Hand of the Man more bearable. (I'll be honest with you guys, I could sit down right now and draw you maps of the world for the last seventeen centuries, one for each century, with all the nations and empires on them, and I will happily explain the major social, political, and scientific developments of the East and West, North and South... but there would be a big fat Africa-shaped hole on all those maps. I haven't the first fucking clue about Africa. It's not because I've gone out of the way to avoid Africa, either: it's because nobody writes about Africa unless they ONLY write about Africa. Nobody mentions Africa in white people school unless it's to discuss the tribal freaks: the midgets, the ladies with rings around their necks, that sort of thing. There isn't a nigger in American today who doesn't know more about European history than I know about African history. My knowledge of Africa picks up right around OH SLAVERY I THINK.) c. But in general the differences between white people and black people aren't going to up and disappear, and there are no actual reasons to make major changes to the white way of doing business other than "it's what's right." Please see my argument with JW and MM about peace explosions and where they work best. Because they do work! Peace explosions do happen! It's just that unlike JW and MM, I know when they are most likely to happen, and what keeps them from going ugly. (Hint: black/white relations in America has bad feng shui.) |
