| A lot of theory has been slung around recently about the death of male intimacy - that is, dudes can't be really close friends anymore without people thinking they are gay, so close male friendships have been almost exterminated by homophobia. Most theorists on this topic consider the whole affair very ugly and I agree. Dudes should be able to live together, dance together, and talk about how much they like each other without sodomy entering into the picture. NO REALLY! I also think men and women should be able to get along like this - close, but not fucking - however our freakishly oversexualized culture allows for less and less nonsexual intimacy every year. We replace "nonsexual intimacy" with "acceptance of different kinds of sexuality" as though the two things were interchangeable - as if there was no difference in accepting a dude as a fag and accepting him as a very close guy friend.
Like you could replace "guy who really loves horses" with "horsefucker" and not lose anything in the translation. Anyway I am pro-grey-area. So I liked Blades Of Glory, not just because it was funny, fast-paced, and full of Xanadu references, but also because it depicted male intimacy without making it gay. Sure, they nodded to gayness. They were like, "Gayness, we totally see you over there," yet the male-male pairs skating team did not become gay, nor did it depend heavily on jokes about faggotry. They brought up some pithy points about male intimacy - like when Napoleon Dynamite and Will Ferrell are examining the chart of pairs skating throws, and learning how to hold hands while pairs skating, and the only way to think about these things was "okay you're the girl and I'm the guy." But seriously - as it has been strangled by a conditioned homophobic reflex, how do you hold hands with a guy? Don't fucking tell me "WHY WOULD I HOLD HANDS WITH A GUY!??!?!", because that's ridiculous. People like to touch other people. Touching calms us down and makes us feel good n groovy. But all the means of touching people without FUCKING them have been getting kicked off the map for reasons I can only imagine. Anyway, there's no reason why two dudes can't be really really close friends and still not fuck. Thanks for the object lesson, Blades Of Glory! Napoleon Dynamite totally walks away with this movie. |
