If people are partly a product of their environment, and the American environment is tacky, comfortable, rushed, and repetitive, then, by and large, Americans won't be worth talking to.
Even you, for instance: I bet you're awful in person. We all saw Kthor in that Blind Date clip, and that was Kthor. God knows how you talk, act, and ...'seem'. Sensible people wouldn't risk losing the half a day it would take to figure out you're not worth knowing and the same judgement could be and is applied to most Americans. It's the smart way to think.
