Rogue Galaxy by Lizard_King 02/16/2007, 12:28am PST
Thus far, it combines the things I liked about Star Ocean 2 and Dark Cloud 2 with none of the deal breakers that kept me from finishing either. Or, for that matter, even getting past the first few hours. Bonus for having the requisite "tough guy" role in the team filled by a pirate with an eyepatch.

Anyhow, RG has extremely hectic, fastpaced combat, usually over in less than 10 seconds, which doesn't break the flow of the game at all. Levelling and grinding are almost entirely unnecessary as conventionally demanded in JRPG's, and the game has an excellent balance between providing incentives for exploration (to allow you to find stuff and maybe gain a few levels) and incentives for moving on in the plot. In short, you can better your characters at a reasonable pace without falling out of the game's plot for extended periods.

The bosses are interesting in a Klonoa 2 kind of way, and the cut scenes are skippable, the first time if need be. It's impossible not to know where you need to go next in the game, although there are other obstacles rather than the J-favourite not-telling-you-anything-useful approach at play that work much better. I'm pretty far from sinking as much time into it as I did with FF12, but I am having much less of a love/hate issue with its mechanics at this point.

The graphics are on par with last generation ps2 games at their best, and the cel shading is subtle and pleasant. Dialogue and voices range from mediocre to appalling, but that is a given for the genre and almost a bonus due to a high percentage of unintentionally homoerotic innuendos per conversation.
