Obscure is a survival horror that slipped through the cracks and is now extremely hard to find, making it...obscure?
Bunch of teens investigate disappearances at their monster infested school. Control 2 at once and switch off at save rooms. Each teen has a different special talent. Resident Evil meets Maniac Mansion meets The Faculty.
+ You pick up duct tape and use it to tape flashlights to your guns. A direct diss on Doom 3?
+ Surprisingly good graphics and frame rate for a small title. Aside from the low detail character models the PS2 version could almost pass for an Xbox game.
- Combat mechanic that I'm not sure I like yet. Enemies have shadows around them that act as a shield until you "boost" your flashlights enough to disable it before you can hurt them with normal weapons.
+ 2 player co-op! Each control a characer at the same time.
+ Characters that die stay dead and the story slightly shifts to accomodate this. I recommend killing off the pussy school reporter.
+ You can get this on ebay (the only place you can get it, gamestop & EB are almost always sold out) for ~$20, $5 for the PC version.
The first 10 minutes? On the Fussbett scale of Silent Hill being a 10, SH2 a zero, and SH3 & 4 a seven, Obscure is about an 8. Solid, enjoyable, and the first 2 player co-op of the genre. Just don't expect your mind to be blown away by anything. |
