Microsoft re-introduces Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 by Ray of Light 01/29/2007, 6:24pm PST
After a long hiatus, this well designed but fragile mouse is once again available for purchase! And it works with IntelliPoint 4.12, the only application-specific mouse button mapper that isn't unusably buggy. I believe this is the only current mouse that can make this claim.

It's being marketed as a "gaming mouse" this time, but is identical in form and function to the original, and has a darker shell. I am stocking up in case they decide to cease production again. Here is a months-old AIM log from the dark days:

Ray: www.nulime.com/...MS-INTELLIMOUSE-EXPLR-3-0-5p
Ray: this is an excellent deal
Fussbett: Why is this mouse so expensive?
Ray: that's for 5
Ray: it's no longer made
Fussbett: It's expensive because it's no longer made?
Fussbett: So it's a collector's item!
Ray: the newer versions don't work with the software that gives you per-app hotkeys. After a while, you have mouse buttons defined for every application and can't go without.
Ray: no, it's cheap there, $70 for 5 or $14 each
Ray: but they're sold out, just like every place is
Fussbett: I'm just trying to assess how it could EVER cost $199
Ray: I'm on about my sixth one now, I would love to be able to buy 10 and not worry about it anymore
Fussbett: And I guess you're saying "programmable buttons" is the answer
Ray: $199 for 5 would be $40 ea. which is about right
Fussbett: Oh 5p is 5 of them
Ray: they also suffer from a slew of design flaws that makes them only last 6-18 months
Fussbett: I made an effort to customize nothing in my computer use. A good habit for a freelancer.
Ray: the cords wear out, the buttons start double-clicking, and the mouse wheel sticks
Under agreement with Microsoft, we are only allowed to sell this hardware item to you, the end user, if you also order a non-Microsoft computer hardware component in the same transaction.

The agreement does not specify what type of computer hardware, so you may choose anything in our Hardware or Systems departments -- even a cable. No software or CD/DVD/zip media.

This applies to every Microsoft hardware item you intend to order. If you are ordering two Microsoft hardware items, you must also order two qualifying accompanying products in the same transaction.
Ray: jesus christ
Ray: only Microsoft could dream this up
Fussbett: only Microsoft would have the POWER to press it into action.
Ray: anyway, they're sold out too as it turns out
Ray: so fuck them
