at some point I decided to block outbound connections on my firewall except for "standard ports" (like 80, 443, etc). And I'd have to open up any additional ports as necessary. Well when I did that it started to take FOR-EVER to log in to my computer, and then when I finally got logged in, I couldn't start any processes.... click firefox, no. Try to start a command shell, no. Ctrl-Alt-Del to see what processes are running, no. And like a minute later everything would get going.
A couple hours of debugging later, and I find out that removing steam from login startup fixes the problem. Huh, Steam times out trying to connect to Valve and in the meantime I cannot start any processes on my system? Huh? WTF is it doing?
Then three months later I decided to try and play Half Life 2 again, and it popped up some bizarre error message about how it couldn't find some file. So I unblocked my firewall and started Steam up manually, thinking... ok, even though I already bought HL2, and even though I already got signed into Steam, and even though I'd already played HL2 like 500 times all the way through, that it was probably some dumb shit like it deactivates your software after so many months and needs to renew its... uh.. encryption keys... or whatever the fuck Steam does.
Long story short: I can't play HL2 anymore, because Steam won't let me. But it will let me play HL2:E1.
