This is by no means a complete list. I am under the impression that stuff uploaded to gp2x.de are release candidates, so if I give a thumbs-down to a game and the author totally uploaded a new version, well, that's what I get.
BIOSHOOT: A side scrolling shoot 'em up. Does not appear to really be finished. The animation is smooth but it's not a lot of fun. Thumbs down!
DIGGER: This is a Mr. Do! ripoff. There's no sound and trying to shoot your ball is very sketchy. There also doesn't seem to be a way to quit back to the main GP2X menu when you're playing. I think Mr. Do! proper is available through MAME, so I can't recommend this. Thumbs down!
MYRIAD: They took the shitty GP thumbpad and made it a strength! In this game you are a spaceship and you hover above alien cities. You drop bombs to destroy the buildings of these cities, Rampage-style. After destroying two cities the planet you invaded blows up and you fight through the resulting asteroid field. The only problem with this game is that it takes forever to get going. The author needs to put some enemies on the first board because, seriously, what fun is it to just bomb cities that can't possibly fight back? Thumbs-up!
PAYBACK: This is the crown jewel, I guess, of GP2X games. It's a Grand Theft Auto clone, but I understand it is also available for the Amiga. It's in 3D and it looks fantastic. Unfortunately, the GP people want thirty bucks for the game and while I wish them well... I mean, come on. However, they released a demo so you know what you're getting into. For $15 I get this game immediately. For $30 I don't. Somewhere in the middle I guess we all make our own decisions. Thumbs up!
BARRAGE: You are a (stationary?) mortar thingie chucking bombs at stuff on the screen. Do you recall the old G.I. Joe named "Short-Fuze"? You have his job here. Not being irrelevant, but in terms of how you kill things. Nothing wrong with this game -- you have to time your shots and I imagine it gets pretty hectic on later levels. Thumbs-up!
DOSBOX: Who knows, I can't get shit to run except the demo. Fuck this. Thumbs-down!
EXULT: The Ultima 7 emulator. Haven't been able to get it run, but I have not given up yet. Push!
THE UR-QUAN MASTERS: Can't get it to run. I don't believe anyone who says they have it working. Thumbs down!
FLUBOPUYO: This game is almost exactly like Tetris, only the individual brick pieces break away and fall through. Apparently I am the only person who has never heard of this game. It's excellent. You play against the computer. It lacks state save, but then, so does every single GP game I've ever downloaded. That's the only negative. Thumbs up!
MAD MIX: It's Pac-Man, but you don't see the whole screen at once. Many monsters, not just four. Hand-drawn graphics. Great sound. I don't know, the concept sucks because you honestly need to see the whole field to play Pac and games that limit you just don't work. On the other hand, this game at least gives you codes when you complete levels. Ah what the hell, it's good enough for this handheld. Thumbs up!
NETHACK: I only played the version with the character set because I can't stand playing this game in ASCII. It's clearly the best game for the system. The menu works flawlessly. Any problem you have with the game will be Nethack based, not due to this port. It's brilliant. Thumbs up!
NOIZ2SA: It's too bad it has such a stupid name, as I would have otherwise downloaded it much earlier. This is a vertical shooter where you play a single dot. It's sort of got a Rez thing going, although I fear that in 2006 a "Rez thing" means more like a masturbatory aid than any other shade of meaning. That's not what I mean. It has a similar art direction, with white replacing the endless black. Noiz2sa lets you start from any level, which is quite handy. It's great, probably the game I've spent the most time with, except for Ball-Tetris up above and Nethack. A version is also available for Windows, but I can't imagine it being all that great on a real computer. Thumbs up!
PANG: I think the original name of this is gp2xpang. Pang, I found out, is what the Japanese call "Buster Bros." If you're not familiar with this game by any name, instead of the three it apparently has, what you're trying to do is burst balloons by shooting harpoons at them. It's a lot of fun if someone is playing with you. (As far as I know this version is one player.) Well allright, it's not a *lot* of fun, but you could play it with your kid and not worry that it's going to emotionally cripple him. The guy you control moves a little too slow in this port -- you get used to it eventually, but you'll probably say that "This is BULLSHIT!" early on. Thumbs up!
SDLSCAV: A fantastic Lode Runner clone. But it dies after the first level! It actually makes me angry that it does so, because the first level is a perfect, modern-day translation of Lode Runner. I demand that whoever is responsible for this game finish it. It's an outrage because the level you do get is crisp, with intuitive controls and a neat wrinkle or two to the whole experience. Thumbs down, but back to up when they fix it!
SUPER TUX: The first level is a pixel-perfect clone of the first level of Super Mario Bros., except it takes place in the frozen cold and Mario is a penguin. Haven't gone beyond that to see if the author changed up the level layouts. Either way it doesn't matter much. It's presented really well, even if that goddamn penguin is a huge cliche at this point. Thumbs up!
XIGON: Might also be called "Zigon X." Reports vary. This is an OK top-down shooter in space. Worth a download. No way to get back to the main menu of the system though. Thumbs up!
