West Wing got bad after a while but it started out good. Studio 60 is hellaciously bad, and it's all because of the writing. The actors are actually doing pretty well with what they've been given (and Matthew Perry was really good when he was on the West Wing, so DON'T GO BLAMING CHANDLER), but the writing is HORRIBLE on this show.
Problem #1: the show is about what goes on behind the scenes on Saturday Night Live. But here's the thing: Saturday Night Live might not be that funny, BUT THE PEOPLE ON IT ARE FUNNY PEOPLE. Ever seen an interview with Will Farrell or Adam Sandler? Hysterical. They aren't professional funnymen because they aren't funny men, but because they are. No one on this show is funny in any way, shape or form. (The show they're producing is clearly unfunny also, but that's kind of realistic.)
Problem #2: worst theme music ever. I'm serious about this, it's getting to where I might mute it for the 10 seconds it's on. The music wouldn't have been worse if Ashlee Simpson wrote and produced it herself.
Problem #3: It's Aaron Sorkin's wish fulfillment given celluloid form. Last week, there was a short subplot where the network that SNL is on turned down Big Brother and picked up The West Wing. IF ONLY, AM I RIGHT? Setting aside the fact that Sorkin called himself a boy genius on his own show (ick), he's writing a show about how big bad network execs are evil and how the writers of show are the true heroes. I wonder if Matthew Perry's character is going to start hitting the bottle too hard and not delivering scripts on time, putting his show months behind schedule? Maybe that will be when his old bosses write their revenge show.
They should have given whatserface that wrote Mean Girls the big budget and the good actors, and given Sorkin the Alec Baldwin show. |
