Having returned to Madison's higher ed, I'm once again in an environment where "The Onion" is everywhere. Your mention of this game reminded me of the review they printed in their last issue which was best summed up as "Japanese folklore references! Coweye!!! A+++++!!!!!!!" with the only mention of gameplay being "influenced by Legend of Zelda." Well no shit, so was Psi Ops.
Spending the whole "Defcon" review talking about the artistic subtexts, totally straight-faced superhero "Graphic Novel" reviews, desperate cocksucking of any non-action foreign film they see. Is it just me, or has "Savage Love" become the least gay part of the Onion's AV club?
Way back in the day their review of "Snakes on a Plane" would have been "Intentionally Stupid, watch it with a group, preferably drunk," then list all the product placements they spotted. The actual review they wrote started with a huge bellyaching paroxysm about the cult following and, of course, included the quote:
The oh-so-worldly-and-jaded Onion wrote:
To keep Phillips from making it to the courtroom, Lawson conspires to unleash poisonous snakes onboard his flight. Early in the film, it's established that Lawson only resorted to such drastic measures because he ran out of other options, which demands the question: How many options do you have to deplete before resorting to snakes-on-a-plane?
The worst is the print version of their blog "The Hater" which is like reading dictation of Dr. Smith from "Lost in Space" leafing through a grocery tabloid and moaning, "Oh, the pain!"
Personally, I blame it all on them moving from Madison to New York. I know a girl born and raised in Milwaukee who moved to NY and now in any conversation she will always find a way to shift the conversation somehow to, "I'M A NEW YORKER! I LIVE IN NEW YORK! I'M NO MIDWEST BUMPKIN! NEW YORK!" to which I respond, "Pass the cheese curds, New Yorker, here's your foam packers' hat." The onion's staff is working themselves into fits trying to be as jaded and world-weary as possible to fit in their posh new surroundings and scraping the bottom of the barrel for all they're worth. |
