I don't mean to be the guy who is all, "I played Adventure for the 2600 and it looked stupid, fuck video games." But someone honestly explain to me the appeal of World of Warcraft. Is it different than the appeal of other MMORPGs? And we only hear about it more because WC2 and WC3 were so big? Is there anything different from it than Everquest? That article did not give me any indication of what made the guy spend all that time in the game. He seemed like a normal, agreeable person and I get that he wanted to please people in his guild, but I don't understand the "hook" that makes people go farm and work a fake job on a multiplayer game. I can understand being drunk with power when you are level 60, but someone please explain what the game does to make you want to get to that level.

(I had a great time playing Eve Online with some guys from Caltrops and would love to pick it up again. I bought a house and was making a text game and just didn't have the time to keep going with it, although things have settled down lately. But I heard that Eve deletes your account after six months, which boggles my mind. There were plenty of things going on with that game that made me laugh my ass off when the bunch of us were playing -- if WoW is like that, then sure, I can see it. But WoW is always described as this huge chugfest. I'm honestly curious of how it is so addicting.)

When you're starting WOW it's not bad because you're running around doing quests, and it's fun with friends. By the end, like say after level 50, it starts to become a farm grind fest, where they have tons of shit you could farm to get cool gear and soon you have to farm many many hours every day to make sure you get all the good stuff. At the beginning it pulls you in with quests you can mostly do by yourself or with a few party members, and the occasional tough quest or instance you do with a full group of 5. Then the novelty wears off and you find yourself running around the world picking flowers or mining ore instead of staying in the forest killing boars.
