A few years ago, around the time of UO: The Second Age, I tried playing Ultima On-line. A friend of mine gave me some money to get going with. I bought some equipment, ran around, killed some rabbits, all fun. One Thursday night they had a bunch of gargolyes attack the town in a scripted event. Awesome.

I eventually burned through his money and asked for some more. It's not real money, after all. He said I should get a job. In the game I should get a job selling meat to hotels or something. That was the last time I played Ultima On-line. Not because I was offended or because it was "beneath" me, but because the idea that I would go out and do something that was no fun to get video game money and PAY FOR IT was astoundingly stupid to me.

I don't mean to be the guy who is all, "I played Adventure for the 2600 and it looked stupid, fuck video games." But someone honestly explain to me the appeal of World of Warcraft. Is it different than the appeal of other MMORPGs? And we only hear about it more because WC2 and WC3 were so big? Is there anything different from it than Everquest? That article did not give me any indication of what made the guy spend all that time in the game. He seemed like a normal, agreeable person and I get that he wanted to please people in his guild, but I don't understand the "hook" that makes people go farm and work a fake job on a multiplayer game. I can understand being drunk with power when you are level 60, but someone please explain what the game does to make you want to get to that level.

(I had a great time playing Eve Online with some guys from Caltrops and would love to pick it up again. I bought a house and was making a text game and just didn't have the time to keep going with it, although things have settled down lately. But I heard that Eve deletes your account after six months, which boggles my mind. There were plenty of things going on with that game that made me laugh my ass off when the bunch of us were playing -- if WoW is like that, then sure, I can see it. But WoW is always described as this huge chugfest. I'm honestly curious of how it is so addicting.)

the dark and gritty...Ice Cream Jonsey!
