It's...okay for soloing, I guess. The early missions are soloable, but that's because the henchmen (npc party members that you can acquire after the introductory missions are completed) can fuck it up only so much at the lower levels. I had a couple of players in my guild that did advanced missions with henchies, but I hated having to use them after about level 10. They only have a single class from which to draw abilities, and while that limitation is somewhat ameliorated by the fact that they have access to some of the elite skills (skills which must be captured from unique bosses, rather than purchased from a skills trainer) they lack the specialized skill sets that can be created by the synergy of dual classed pcs.

In other words, I can set up a monk/warrior who can take on a whole horde of trolls singlehandedly, or a monk/warrior who's an excellent dedicated healer, or a monk/warrior or monk/mesmer who's a dedicated protector/bonder, etc. In the first example, I use items to lower my max hit points to 55, then equip skills that:

1. reduce maximum damage I can take from any single hit to 10% of my current max hp (i.e. with the equipped items, I can't take more than 5 dmg per hit)
2. regenerate hp at a rate of something like 30 hp/second
3. allow me to gain energy every time I'm hit, so I always have enough energy to continuously recast the aforementioned spells

The combination of warrior and monk skills make me invincible, as I can regen faster than anything can damage me, unless I come up against an opponent with the ability to strip enchantments. Whereas with an npc, you can only have a monk. Not too terrible, and the AI is decent at times, but they won't be able to mix and match skills from multiple classes that work together to enhance each other, like in the above example. In the endgame missions, you'll save yourself a ton of frustration by partying with a group that has characters with those specialized skillsets and who know how to use them.

Also, the henchman level is determined by which area you're in. In midgame missions, they're around level 10. And they stay at level 10 until you get far enough along into the game, at which point they abruptly level up to 15 or so. Right before you reach that point, they start seeming somewhat underpowered.
