They were mostly discrete logic, meaning there's no CPU to emulate (and, in most cases, no ROMs to dump). With a lot of patience you can simulate discrete logic hardware with a fair degree of accuracy, but I doubt the MAME team would go for that, even though MAME already does it for certain things (like the Asteroids sound hardware).
(There was one release of MAME which actually came with simulated versions of Pong and Monaco GP, but they were quickly removed. In fairness to the MAME team, they were pretty lousy recreations.) |
