I recently had similar power supply problems. I had a discount, off-brand PS that said it was 500W, but it couldn't boot the system I put together. (It worked just fine on a much older Athlon XP machine.) I picked up a 500W supply made by "Antec" and everything was fine. The Antec one was over twice as expensive, though. I think it would have been cheaper if I bought it online rather than locally, but who wants to wait.
