The way I played it, I had the movie in Media Player at about 75% volume and the audio track in Winamp at full volume. It's easy to set up, but I bet getting it running with an actual DVD would be a little more annoying.
Positives:
- I consider anything that I laugh at loud at a few times to be pretty damn funny, since I'm usually a dour individual.
- Mike Nelson's pop culture jokes are as good as ever.
- I don't know about the other ones, but the Star Trek one features Kevin Murphy, and the interplay really is just like watching an MST3K episode, except it's a popular (if sucky) film. Star Trek V is especially suited for this, but I bet the other ones (like Road House and Crossroads) would be gems as well.
- When you get the syncing right it comes off perfectly.
- It's less than the price of a Nacho Crunch Grilled Stuft Burrito.
Negatives:
- The MST3K repetitiveness is still there.
- From reading online, the films with just Mike Nelson commenting don't come off as well since it's just him talking to himself the whole time.
- The track uses something called "disembaudio" to help you sync it with the film, which really isn't that great. Basically every so often a robotic voice repeats a line of the film that's supposed to be perfectly in tune with the movie's audio. Sometimes the timing drifts and you have to reset it, and every time that metallic voice comes in it takes you out of the experience.
- A lot of the jokes are very time dependent, based on facial expressions, tones of voice, etc. So if your sync is off, it's kinda screwed.
- Resetting the timing is a bitch, especially with Winamp and other things that feature dragging imprecise little scroll bars.
- If you have to pause it prepare to spend a couple minutes resetting the damn thing.
