Grab a cheeseburger! Here we go!
I've been upgrading my current machine for the past few years little by little. Here's what I have now:
Abit AV8 mobo (socket 939, AGP4x/8x)
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (socket 939)
1GB (2x512MB) Corsair ValuSelect 184-pin SDRAM DDR400
Geforce 4200Ti ( :( )
Soundblaster Live something
80GB EIDE Seagate HDD
40GB EIDE WD HDD
300W PSU
So I bought the motherboard and processor expecting the brand new (at the time) socket 939 to stick around for awhile. Now, AM2 is here, so I don't see much of a point in sticking with 939.
At first, I was just going to upgrade the processor and add some new HDDs. But then I found out about the aforementioned AM2, and that my motherboard didn't seem to support SATA 3.0 or 240-pin memory. Not like I really know what SATA 3.0 is going to do for me, but I want it.
So that snowballed into this:
MSI K9N Platinum Socket AM2 ($108.99)
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ AM2 ($150)
2GB (2x1GB) Corsair XMS 240-pin DDR2 675 ($152 after rebate and still cheaper than the 184-pin version HMMMMM)
eVGA 256-P2-N564-AX Geforce 7900GT ($273.99)
(2) WD Cavier SE16s @ 250GB 7200rpm SATA 3.0 ea. ($82.99x2)
CoolerMaster Centurion 5 case + PSU (~$100...I at least need the new PSU)
This equals a brand new system for just under a grand, with nothing cannibalized from the old machine except the sound card and maybe a few fans. I have a decent 19" LCD already.
Any suggested upgrades or downgrades to any of those items? My biggest problem has been finding a cheaper motherboard that has a firewire connection. I checked my calendar and the year is 2006, so I couldn't guess why this seems to be a deluxe item.
I'm also considering a Thinkpad T60, which would run me $2,000+ with student discounts. Celebrate my purchasing power!
