I have to get a new (used) car. I have $5000. Pros are: dependable, good gas milage, low repair costs. The going theory, in the household, is a Hyundai Accent. But what does Caltrops think?

In 2000, I do believe I bought a 1998 Neon R/T for $5,000. It was OK, although there is a guaranteed water pump replacement at about 70,000 miles. Decent mileage, noisy though -- never standed me and I really only otherwise had it in the shop for things like brakes and so forth.

Of course, previous Neons had head gasket errors. When I took mine in for the water pump I was told that I needed a new head gasket as well. As if by reflex! Chrysler was paying for part of this ... but only for cars that actually had the problem. They refused to do so for mine (natch) and I drove it another 80,000 miles with what the local dealer described as a completely blown head gasket. Not only was that an important lesson in "never, ever going to the fucking dealer" (we all have to learn this for ourselves) but it also swore me off American automobiles for the indefinite future. I'm sure the Japanese and the Swedes are thieves just as thick, it's just that they haven't tried to fuck me over yet.

My girlfriend will probably be looking for a new (er, used) car next year for around that price and the Accord seemed to be the best bet when we were thinking about it.
