Video game soundtrack streaming radio sites by Bunyip 07/26/2006, 9:08pm PDT
I found two.

VGAmp

Features:

  • Multiple formats supported: Winamp, Media Player, RealPlayer, Java Player

  • 2 streams

  • Requests!

  • "What's Playing" automatically updated on the main page

Cons:

  • Highest bandwidth available is 56k. There's a 128k stream but I guess they want you to pay for it?

  • The second stream is for Square/Enix games only.

  • Requests are broken. The site's been down for the hour or so I've been listening so I assume this means forever.

  • "What's Playing" is also broken. You can see how the long the track runs but not what it actually is.

  • Due to the above two problems I have no idea what I'm listening to or what the selection is like. You can see some recently added albums on the News page. Some new ones are added every three months or so and it looks like exclusively console. Since I only really know PC games I don't know about the quality. I hear Katamari is good?

  • Site hurts eyes, painful quotes from chat room, lots of exclamation marks, incredibly gay in general.

Gaming FM

Features:

  • Realplayer only. But! Free 128k streaming.

  • 4 streams - modern console, classic console, pc only and mixed.

  • Requests! That work! 3 an hour on the 3 specialist stations, 1 an hour on the all-in-one.

  • "What's Playing" page has the last ten songs for each station, and the realPlayer stream has the name of the current song.

  • Only as gay as a video game soundtrack streaming radio station needs to be.

Cons:

  • Account required to make requests (no biggie).

  • The admins buy all the music so updates aren't likely to happen all that often. I think this applies to the other station as well. It also means they're limited to what's been released as a soundtrack, so you're unlikely to hear much really old-school stuff. I guess I won't get to hear Dynamite Dux or Psycho Fox. :(

Conclusion:

Gaming FM wins hard. The only reason I could think of to recommend the other is if they have a better selection, but from what I can tell that's not the case.
