Whee!
One of the reasons I could never be the fat goth whore I so long to be is that the music really sucks. Like so many William Gibsons, goth bands toy with great ideas and then just muff it all by not being weird enough, not taking it far enough, kissing the knife's edge of Latinate madness or sprinkling a little bloody Catholic flavor over what are essentially dull pop songs.
Gae Bolg And The Church Of Fand are weird enough. Tintagel is good, gory, chanting-and-trumpets Gothic nonsense, sung entirely in francais ancien and Latin. It's not gloomy-Gus-cut-myself music, it's Goth Done Right: a soundtrack to a forgotten French medieval horror movie, a big eunuch-y toast to the first post-Jesus millenium with extra heavy drones. Plus the lead singer totally namedropped Ptose's "Ignobles Limaces".
Tintagel is kinda good. 92% perfect for Zseni, but 40% for traditional goth kids. If you don't like Tintagel, you probably are a traditional goth kid. |
