One of them is owned by Novell and so isn't really worth it. The other one's CD-based installer "accidentally" installed itself into my (until that time) working Windows 98SE partition automatically-or-by-my-mistake, so OOPS! There goes another Win98 install.

So the free variants of DOS are, as I mentioned in the abstract sense, in theory perfectly good for running old DOS games. So long as you already have a FAT32 partition of some sort, and probably a bootloader of some sort set up properly. Which takes way too long and/or is impossible.

So yeah, I was really pumped when I figured out that not only can I get perfect sound, I can also run Krondor in Windows, allowing for quick ALT-TABs out to the Ultimate Betrayal At Krondor Guide for riddle "hints" or for the exact location of the Arms of Dala.

As for DOSBox, I've never used it, but on the underdogs I read some slowness complaints, and slowness is really not acceptable when I'm running from Romney to Wolfram to make yet another lucrative gunrunning cycle. If anything, I want a FAST-FORWARD button that I can press. You don't know how much I loved playing FF3/FF6 emulated because I could literally (thanks to ZSNES) fast-forward through all the crappy dialogue! Because it's so inane, I could pick up the gist of everything without stopping to slow. ALSO: battles are fast!

Now I'm rambling, so I'll wrap up: Don't bother with FreeDOS or whatever. DOSBox: maybe. FF3/6: enjoyable at high RPMs. Conclusion.
