| First off, props to the commercials for giving away all the surprises. I totally couldn't have handled the shock of seeing giant barn girl or slug man without lots of heads up.
I liked this movie better when it was The Faculty (which according to people who've seen Night of the Creeps, was based off of Night of the Creeps), set in a high school instead of hick town, and had a budget. The Faculty was pretty not good, but still a much better alien zombie flick, so there you go. The same guy, James Gunn (the second!) wrote the Dawn of the Dead remake, so you'd think he'd know better not to bore the audience to fucking death with over half an hour of worthless, clumsy exposition before anything happens. Remember DotD? Man what a great opening. So aside from rewriting Night of the Creepy Faculty, Gunn rehashes once good ideas from DotD: hot blond lead, the asshole authority figure and the "elevator music" moments. Perhaps nothing is subject to the law of diminishing returns more than comedy, and by the fifth time you pause a hectic moment for a character to say "That's fucked up" (actual line), you find yourself missing a (frigging) Jon Stewart movie. And the number one area done better by Dawn of the Dead? Tits! Seriously, where were they? |
