In fact in terms of gameplay it's probably my favorite console RPG of all time. There's a ton of (mostly useless, but amusing) non-combat skills to fool around with and a giant Golden Saucer area to dick around in with lots of side games.
My favorite part was the combat. It's like a (much) faster paced Secret of Mana with auto-targetting, plus no real grace period between hits which I love. When you get higher up in levels you can really fuck enemies up and fuck them up hard in an unrelenting rain of blows. There are a ton of active and passive combat abilities you can get. Put all high level physical fighters into combat and watch absolute mayham break out with special attacks, screeching voices, and damage number explode onto the screen. The last boss is a monster that flies all over the place and blows all your party members back with powerful shockwaves. I finally got him pinned down between two fighters long enough for everyone to gangpile him. As the ridiculous combos reined down and he disappeared behind a cloud of damage numbers I actually shouted "DIE!" at the screen (only to have him break the pile and kill everyone =( ).
I'd advise slowly weening off attack magic around the mid-point and concentrate on phystical attack characters. Magic starts off very quick and useful but later on the high level spells' animations take FOREVER and they do nowhere near the damage of really beefed up physical attacks.
There are only voices during combat. Horrible, but they're so bad they're funny.
Plot? Eh. I just really played it for the combat and dicking around the towns. It's really slow for the first hour or two until you leave the first continent, but does pick up. |
