16 Blocks is the pinnacle of magic negro movies. Unless you plan to turn the genre on it's M. Night head and reveal that your magic negro is actually not magic nor a negro, you shouldn't even attempt another magic negro movie. 16 Blocks has closed the book on it.
Mos Def plays the conscience of aged Bruce Willis, and to accomplish this he acts mildly retarded and speaks in the voice of Anton Jackson, the Damon Wayans homeless character on In Living Color. Everyone on-set during the filming said "Yes, this is a good voice he is doing. He should keep it up". And he did! We all became deeply endeared to his childlike qualities, and through the eyes of this simple man, we are all redeemed and learn a little bit about ourselves in the process.
It starts out well enough, as a riff on the storyline of The Gauntlet. Then it ends up on a bus in a police stand off. Is this a remake or is the movie trolling me?
