War Rock and digg.com users by Fussbett 12/09/2005, 3:33pm PST
Ray of Light hipped me to a Gamers Daily article pointing out that there is a free Korean knock off of Battlefield 2 called "War Rock". Then two other people sent me the link. Apparently I'm the "BF2 guy" in everyone's buddy list. Not wanting to let everyone down, I dove right in.

Sanitario666: War Rock! Is it good?
Ray of Light: Probably it's good in that Korean Goldstar / LG way
Ray of Light: Workmanlike, imperfect but serviceable
Sanitario666: Haha key #1 in War Rock is "Sword"
Sanitario666: I guess that's knife.
Ray of Light: If you're small like Koreans are, a regular knife looks like a sword.
Ray of Light: This website is unnavigable.
Sanitario666: You were the first of three people to send me that same link, BTW. Congrats.
Sanitario666: I assume Slashdot just updated?
Ray of Light: digg.com

While my 180 megs of War Rock downloaded, I went to digg.com and discovered a hundred user comments under the inflammatory and misleading headline "Battlefield 2 For FREE".

Sanitario666: That War Rock site doesn't work with FireFox.
Sanitario666: It didn't phase this digg.com guy though:
Yes, I could have used a browser besides FireFox, but I am way too lazy. Instead, I simply disabled images, filled out the form, and typed in "javascript:fmNewbie.submit();" into the address bar (it submits the form).
Sanitario666: The lazy man's out.
Ray of Light: HOW LAZY

All I could find is a Windows version. But I'm attempting to run that in Cedega (4.4.3) in Linux.

Sanitario666: Is digg.com hell?
I'm already at 10% with the download. It's probably a virus, though, or some kind of a system fuck up piece of shit... which is why I chose to install their "Manual installation", which they claim creates no registry entries and can be uninstalled just by deleting the game's folder.

Sanitario666: That guy figured out a way to beat the system. At it's own game!
Am I the only one that thinks this is a bit fishy? Seriously gents, what better way to launch a virus/trojan, then to have the user willingly install it? And the incompatibility with Firefox?..... Yeah, something definitely not right in Denmark.
Ray of Light: GENTS
Sanitario666: Fuck, gents, lets be serious.
Ray of Light: THE TIME HAS COME FOR GRAVITY
Sanitario666: Enough jokes. Let's talk trojans.
Sanitario666: ...and now for a butchered Shakespeare quote... Denmark stinks!
Ray of Light: Presented as a non-sequitur conclusion based on a browser incompatibility.

hey, any fedora versions? Man, that would really make my day...
Sanitario666: Why does that guy wake up in the morning?
Ray of Light: yeah, that's the best he's going to feel all day
Ray of Light: when he's first woken up and the hours are still alive with the tingling possibility of NEW FEDORA VERSIONS of ... anything
Ray of Light: each night, he returns to his bed, having died just a little
Sanitario666: I suppose it's actually the opposite of my guess. He's really relentless optimistic.
Sanitario666: "Fuck, this game might come out for Fedora, right? No? Well, maybe next time"
Sanitario666: He's fucking due.

No, it's called CAUTION. Something that seems to completely escape the average internet user these days. When I see something like this I have questions. If you don't then you have serious issues. Don't pretend to lump software like Open Office or Firefox into the same catagory as this game. The organizations behind those products have a clear and understandable motivation for doing what they are doing, not to mention accountability. I'm not down on free software. Hell I have Open Office 2.0 on this computer, and I'm filling out this post with Firefox 1.5.
Ray of Light: STOP YOUR PRETEND... LUMPING
Ray of Light: YOU FOOL NO ONE.
Sanitario666: They're all fake lumpers.

All I'm saying is that some of the people around here will download and install anything. Then when your computers get attacked by malware, you freak out and blame Micro$oft or someone else. I hope you enjoy the game, but the responsible way to post this article would have been to ask people to use caution when downloading crap from unknown sources. Maybe you haven't seen some of the better Phishing attacks out there lately. It's not hard to set up a website and pretend you are someone you aren't so that you can steal information or worse. Hell this whole Digg post could have been a ruse. Did any of you consider it? That's the difference between someone who can have the same machine up and running for years with no crashes, virii or other malware raping their machine. I also don't worry about my personal info being jacked off my computer because I use CAUTION while online.

I've seen people get raped from this kind of thing. All I'm saying is INVESTIGATE a little before you click "ok" on shit. I really hope you all enjoy this cheesy knock off. I'll keep on playing the real thing that cost me a GIGANTIC $40.
Ray of Light: "That's the difference between someone who can have the same machine up and running for years with no crashes, virii or other malware raping their machine. "
Ray of Light: There are also other differences
Sanitario666: Can any of you brag about your computers uptime? No? Shut up then. I'll continue to not try new things, thank you.

Yeah, and we should trust these guys, why? There is NO regulation on the crap you are installing. The game itself probably has security holes that would make your ass water. You can call it paranioa all you want, but I've been in the IT industry for almost 14 years now, and I don't trust any software that's "free" from an unregulated source without an in-depth explanation. How does this company make money exactly? According to their site they have a corporate structure, yet their products are all free? lol. Why not sell the game for $1
Ray of Light: I hope he has an LJ
Damn.... I need to quit my job so that "free" sounds as good to me as it does to you guys. lol
Sanitario666: That's his "Psh, free" post

no firefox in Korea? no apple? You can't even use firefox to view their website? No Linux support? the games free but closed source? Korea is the #2 spammer -second only to the US. I only run Linux so there's no point in me downloading the game. So quality of the game aside -I think you're getting pwned.
Sanitario666: Korea is the #2 spammer, Ray.
Sanitario666: Think about it.
Sanitario666: What next, downloading things from the #1 spamming country?
Ray of Light: Not running Linux?

Maybe you don't have a problem with their "philosophy" and you run windoze and you don't care about source code or firefox or spam or Mom or apple pie... knock yourself out. You're probably already a member of the zombie horde and there's precious little that can be done to change your mind or bring you back from the ranks of the brain-craving undead.
Ray of Light: WINDOZE
Sanitario666: I think the sneer quotes imply that the philosophy is communism.
Ray of Light: Taken in context, the zombie assertion might even be sincere
Ray of Light: "I save who I can."

Sanitario666: "You were Registrated "
Sanitario666: Time to get my sword.

Calling DOCTOR HOTS

You don't even get a sword at first. You start out with knuckles, so in other words, you never press that button. You get the sword by advancing in rank and buying it with in-game money earned. Being a free Korean game, I'm sure there's a micropayment route to getting new weapons too.

I win

If you select HIGH graphic options, you don't get dynamic lighting or lightmap shadows! This screenshot has static shadows, but I swear that got ADDED by the screenshot. My gameplay screen looked much worse, if you can imagine. You've gotta enable dynamic lighting and shadows manually in the options menu. Suddenly a Fedora port doesn't sound so far fetched...

Meh

I cranked up the resolution and turned on all the graphic options (click for full res). Meh.

emote

The best new feature War Rock contributes to the FPS scene is four different emotes. He's me emoting "Let's Go!"

As you can guess from my salty tone, it's not free BF2, no matter how excited the cheap people get about the news. It's actually like the Quake 3 mod "Urban Terror" but with vehicles. A very chaotic and fast Counter-Strike feel. So it's good for free, but not nearly as good as my last favourite free FPS; Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory.
