FEAR was a potentionally great 2 minute firefight repeated ad nauseam by FA-BI-OH! 11/11/2005, 9:54pm PST

Not because of the horror elements, but because of the awesome enemy squad AI and the relentless slow motion particles spraying from every single little parallax-mapped crater in the walls as you dodged bullets. Levels weren't exciting visually, but most of the face-offs happened in little mazes were you could really see those AI assholes splitting up and strafing up on you. Most fun I've had shooting people in the head in an FPS since Half Life 2, which was the most fun I've had shooting people in the head in an FPS since Half Life 1. A cheap health-system and a contrived plot sure did its best at fucking up the fun, but the roaring dynamic of its gun fights with cranked up graphics looks and feels nothing short of a healthy step up in FPS combat.

Craters left in walls were flat fake looking decals that were all about one foot in diameter, no matter if you had shot the wall with a 9mm or rocket launcher. The graphics were cranked up only in the sense of system requirements, all while looking worse than Doom 3 and Half Life 2.

The AI was great, but it also didn't matter because the "dynamics" of combat were

1. Get slaughtered if you try take super accurate enemies on without slo-mo, just like Max Payne.

2. Unlike Max Payne, you activate slo-mo at which point you're pretty much untouchable and combat becomes way too easy. Point the crosshairs over enemies and hold down the mouse button until they're all dead.

3. If all the enemies aren't dead by the time you run out of slo-mo, hide behind a corner until it recharges, then repeat step 2.

Slo mo wasn't optional. You needed it. You were forced to use it and once you did combat was a cakewalk.

The whole game was the exact same firefight against the exact same squad of guys in the exact same boring environment followed by the exact same static + ghost dissolving into ashes "scare" that marks anyone as the biggest pussy alive if it actually manages to scare them.

The game runs the usualy 10 hours. The demo is about half an hour. You could play through the demo twenty times and get the exact same experience as playing the full game. THAT'S HOW REPETITIVE IT IS.
