If he's lifting his mouse for a circle strafe, there's a good chance he leaves his FPSs with a low mouse sensitivity. Sensitivity isn't precision as you guessed out of the newbish blue, it's actually speed. By upping sensitivity you make small mouse motions go great distances.
Here's the biggest problem with deciding that you're going to use a trackball for all your FPSs: you get good at a trackball. What does that get you? Now you're tied to using a fucking trackball. That's a step below all those people who sit down at your computer and want to remap all the keys. "I can't work under these conditions where CTRL is the crouch key!" Me? I'm good with the fucking mouse -- it's like having a blood type of AB+ because I can use any computer in the world.
Having said all that, a trackball would be good in BF2 for the tank, for continuous turret motion.
