Actually, I've come back from 20+ second deficits by driving in the wrong lane, not taking my finger off the burst and not crashing anymore. (Then again, I think I've also done the same only to see him pull further ahead. WTF?)

Your other two complaints are spot on though.

Overall, the game's fun wears thin after a time but it's still a good game to come back to when there's nothing better to do.
