| So I loved the graphics of ICO and the mystery of the castle and the ghosts intrigued me, but the crate shoving and torch lighting gameplay put me to sleep.
Shadow of the Colossus takes the graphics and mysterious atmosphere of ICO, but instead of having gameplay that revolves around assisting the handicapped, it revolves around gushing jets of blood. So you play this medieval dude with an ancient magic sword who's traveled to the ends of the earth to this temple so his dead girlfriend can be revived. The god of death tells him to go and kill 16 collossi (?) first. Gameplay is pretty much, jump on your horse, use your magic sword to point the way to the next colossus, ride over there, and kill it. The problem, of course, is that these are gigantic fucking colossuses. That huge motherfucker on the front of the cover that dwarfs your little dude and his horse? That's the first and the smallest of them. These collossi are fucking awesome. They're this weird combination of hairy animal and stone masonry like sko. medieval cyborgs. The next brilliant part of the gameplay is that your dude isn't all superpowered and crap. He can ride a horse, swing a sword, shoot a bow, and climb. That's it. In the context of the game and your own character's limitations, its a both a huge rush and a testament to how badly he wants to get laid when he jumps onto the leg of an apartment building-sized monster and starts stabbing it in the leg. Fortunately, all this celibacy has endowed your character with an incredibly strong grip. He can grab onto things like vines and the tufts of hair on the colossusses' bodies. The collossi are understandably pissed off at having this tiny dude crawling all over them and they swing their arms around and otherwise try to shake you off as you hang on for dear life with your legs flailing this way and that waiting for a breathers you can plunge your sword into the glowing weak spot rune in their heads. You have a health meter and a strength meter. As you hang on to the colossus and get flung in every direction your strength runs out before you lose your grip and fall to the ground for the colossus to stomp you into paste. To succeed, you've got to climb between safe spots on the body to catch your breath (and they're only safe for split seconds) before climbing your way towards the weak spot.
