Dystopia "demo" review (Half-Life 2). by Creexul :( 09/11/2005, 2:04am PDT
I don't know why it's called a "demo" because it's not a representation of a full game which you can purchase soon. It's more like an early early beta, or an alpha even. There's still a bunch of bugs.

Overall this is sort of a Front Line Force futuristic crazy guns and implants Shadowrun Deus Ex 1 and 2 inspired multiplayer team deathmatch capture the objectives mod. There are even "cyberdecks" and "cyberspace" in the game, where you have to have a hacker dude with a cyberdeck (one of your inventory loadout options, along with shit like cloaking, thermal vision, and even a cortex bomb ala Shadowrun AGAIN) get to a terminal and run around this 3D cyberspace shit which is basically sort of Lawnmower Manish winding box tunnels with video screens on the inside that you can use to turn mounted turrets against your enemies, and unlock and open doors and do objectives and shit. When someone is in front of a terminal in cyberspace, if you're standing behind them at that terminal, you can watch them run around inside cyberspace with the crazy HL2 "video screen" effect, which is used constantly with video screens on walls and on terminals and stuff. There are also buttons you can push on some of these video screens and wall terminals, the same as in Doom 3.

The rocket launcher even has its own viewscreen which shows you its nose cam view when it fires and autotracks enemies.

The final image when the rocket explodes stays on there like some goofy snapshot of death of your enemy.

The weapons and loadouts are pretty awesome. You pick your team, then you pick light, medium, or heavy class. Each class has a completely different weapon arsenal, besides a melee weapon and small SMG (which fills in for a pistol, because it's THE FUTURE). If you go with light, you have a bigger selection of accessories and "implants" you can pick (LIKE BREAST IMPLANTS?????????? NO I AM ONLY FOOLING). For an early version of this mod it looks like everything is pretty well balanced already. Heavy armor gets super powerful weapons, but they have low ammo or really long reload times (the rocket launcher can automatically track enemies and blows up really huge and does a ton of damage, but it takes 15 entire seconds to ready up another rocket). Medium has a nice assault rifle and even a futuristic M1 with semi auto and 8 shots that fire powerful slugs, but don't do instant kills. Only the light class can use cloaking, which turns you mostly invisible except for a transparent light shell, and you can be seen with people who have the infrared vision implant.

For right now, there seem to be a lot of lag problems on a lot of servers (sometimes), and I've had the game crash many times. If you even try to bind your implants to something other than F1 through F5, it crashes the game as soon as you spawn. The game has a pretty steep learning curve at the beginning, and as the "punks" team I'm still not sure how you are supposed to destroy the core to win, because your team has to know what they're doing and you have to hack something to open the force field in front of the core and then you blow it up I think. It's crazy.

The future for this mod promises better stability and even vehicles (as seen in the demo movie).

Anyway, my verdict is positive, but it's not for everyone and you may not even be able to get the mod to work for you. If you do, it might fuck up so much that you won't be able to play it right, or it'll just be boring. So far there's only the one official map, which is a good map.
