Here is the end of the grounds of our hotel, the Hotel Nacional, in downtown new Havana. The left of the picture is a cliff that drops off to the national highway below, which is right beside the ocean, so it's a nice view. The little trench and wooden planks to the left and middle of the photo are BUNKERS where the Cuban troops sat during the CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS, waiting for the US invasion.
In the trenches.
You can walk right down into the trenches and bunkers, but holy shit, they don't give you a lightbulb, so you should start taking pictures just for sight purposes. This is a little room off the main trench.

The main "room" is plastered with these news clippings for tourists, but unfortunately no English. Again the camera is a massive help in the bunker exploration as I took a shot of each of the six walls and I will painstakingly translate each clipping. Sometime. They'll be pretty interesting because a hilarious aspect of Cuba is how it sees itself on the world's stage. Cuba doesn't think it was a small pawn between the Soviets and US. Cuba sees itself as the star and winner of that show.
"26 JULIO", the 26th of July, was Castro's codename for the social revolution, so you'll see this "celebrated" around the city. For example, I guess this private citizen felt compelled to unfurl a three-storey banner from his balcony in full view of the tourist hotel. WINK.
This is probably the most famous hotel in Cuba, because before 1959 it was the brand new Havana Hilton, but then so sorry, IT BELONGS TO THE PEOPLE NOW. In the lobby are cool pictures of Che and Fidel and friends, chilling in the lobby with drinks and cigars, after finally rolling into Havana and winning the revolution.
Above the Habana Libre: lots of vultures! Possibly eagles, but the story is better and more symbolic with vultures. They never flapped their wings, just circled in an endless glide. Hell, they were pelicans for all I know. I'm no botanist.
Holy shit, it's some sort of Cuban turkey chicken. I took about ten pictures of these things before this money shot where he decided to look up at me. While I was doing that my girlfriend was all "Can you stop taking pictures of the turkey chickens already?" |
