Does a service exist yet that will:
1. Let me download one song w/o a service contract
2. Let me save that song to my HD indefinately
3. Allow me to copy the song to a disc I can play in my car stereo (mp3 or converted to wav)
Reason: I've been trying to DL Foo Fighters - Best of You for a while, but every file on Limewire and Kazaa Lite is corrupted. It always turns out to be about 25 minutes of no sound. I've actually run into this phenomenon a few times with the latest releases. I don't know if it's a problem on my side, or the RIAA is finally figuring out a way keep people from burning songs, or everyone on Limewire is clueless/ambivalent to the fact that they're hosting corrupted files.
Criteria: No apple crap, I don't have an Ipod, I've no plans to get one either. My car plays Mp3 and WMA files just fine, thanks.
Apple's is the least offensive legit download service available (that has an actual library of desirable music). I've not bought much from it but it meets all your criteria with relatively (compared to your alternatives) minimal DRM. This will go a step further and strip all of Apple's DRM from whatever you buy. You now own all the songs you paid a buck a piece for without any restrictions.
Apple AAC is MP4, most players can handle it. If not, you can convert it to whatever, yes lossy, but you are fine with limewire or the shit WMA of the other services so what do you care? If your awesomness prevents you philosophically, you can rent your music on a subscriber bases from Yahoo, Real, Napster or MS, but then you would be an incredibly dumb cunt. While you're proudly demonstrating your awesomness with a steadfast refusal to purchase the most ubitiquous MP3 player on the planet, you won't be needing this winamp plug in that negates the need to use itunes and actually has quite a bit more functionality than Itunes provides.
