Just rented this. Fussbett is entirely correct in the ridiculousness far surpassing the point you can handle it anymore. League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was actually a better "retro high tech" movie. Remember that horrible Venice sequence where every kind of logic went out the window and things just got progressively more silly: giant sub lurking through canals of Venice, city population of 100 gathered in one square, car driving past ten thousand henchmen scattered across ten miles of city, buildings all collapsing into each other in domino chain reaction, stopping the buildings by calculating one KEY building that can be destroyed to stop the domino effect and launching a radio guided cruise missile from the sub into it?
Sky Captain was the Venice scene the entire time, only less ugly and cheap looking. In between trying to "pay tribute to" (ripoff) as many scenes other adventure movies that you can think of, including Inidanda Jones's plane trips across maps, King Kong's island, and Star Wars' Darth Maul. The director gets bored with the stylized comicbook feel and just ditches it halfway in.
Something with these retro high tech movies though, they need to learn the difference between cool, ridiculous, and impossible beyond suspension of disbelief. I will buy a prototype car in 1899. I will not buy radio guided cruise missiles in the same period. I will buy a giant sub. I not buy wireless radio. I will buy helicarriers and giant robots in the 1930's, but not hover craft/platforms/robots, airplanes that convert to subs (and can survive the 300mph impact into water, as well as having room left over for grappling lines and a payload of sticky bombs), communicating via radio underwater (impossible), and a dozen other things.
Props though to Omid Djalili for playing nothing but the haggling mideastern merchant.
