Thief did sound, but SS2 took it to a different level. In Thief you used sound to navigate the game. In SS2 you did a bit of that, but the game also used sound against you as the main weapon to frighten you.

and Thief didn't? I take it you never made it to the "Return to Citadel" level. Thief's handful of supernatural levels had all the good scares of SS2 (and an actual good game to boot), one year before SS2 itself.

A psy ops can learn invisibility without too much hassle.

Why? Killing everything with the wrench was faster and less of a hassle. Is my fault for lacking patience, or the game's for crappy design not encouraging stealth or making it the slightest bit fun?
And invisibility was just that, invisibility. There wasn't any Thief-life tension to using it, hoping you wouldn't get caught. Unless you walked straight up to an enemy and bumped into him, you'd never be noticed. One retarded exploit was becoming invisible then casting that pyrotechnic aura thing. You'd kill all enemies around you while they stood there unable to see you.

I'm pretty sure there are people who beat the game without killing any of the standard monsters. There are special dudes you have to kill like the end boss and the ninjas with keycards...

That's another thing that bugged me about this game. Everything was standard monsters. You almost never got attacked by more than 2 enemies trickling in at once. It felt like an RPG of nothing but pushover random encounters. Except for the 2 bosses and cowardly red ninjas, I think the only "special" encounter was the 5 zombies ambusing you after you blew the shuttle bay. SS1 had tons of exciting ambushes and situations. "Welcome to my killing machine!"

Degrading weapons is just irritating. I can't think of any game ever which would become funner/scarier if you caused the weapons to fall apart after 10 shots.
I don't think it was about scaryness primarily. It was more about forcing the player to make decisions. That's what SS2 did more than any other FPS before or since,

???o_O???

and the thing that has been copied the least.

that is a shame

Everything from the obvious decision of what RPG stat to increase to the subtle decision of weapon choices. That's one of the reasons that it was a deep game, besides the stuff like story and level design.

Subtle? You had no clue how useful the weapons were until you got the skill points to use them. Decision making is kind of limited when 75% of the choices were worthless. Wow the exotic weapons must be awesome since they require a billion points of weapon skill and research....fuck I got ripped off.

And yes, the game was a bit more tense when I was holding a pistol, knowing that I would have to retreat from anything big, because I needed to preserve my rifle.

The only enemy unkillable by the wrench I ran into were those rare floating brain thingies. The exploding robots could be finished off with a final shot at distance.

So what's left? Message logs? I guess that must be it! The secret to making your FPS go deeper is message logs!
It was good enough for Doom3 to copy, wasn't it?

The audio logs were the only good point once the main atmosphere wore off. I think this was mentioned in a review somewhere.....

So I take it you're a fan of the Derek Smart games?
I said failing to reaching perfection. Derek Smart games fail to reach mediocrity.

I think it's more the case of Caltrops preferring unoriginal games with good execution to original, but tragically flawed experiments.

Some other games with lots of great ideas but also some flaws that cause some people to hate them: Far Cry, Morrowind, I-War 2, GalCiv, The entire RTS genre

what?
