I've used C++ a little bit (mostly C in what I've written professionally) but I've started to accept the fact that I am not going to be programming video games in my life for pay in any capacity, which I understand is almost exclusively done in C++ these days. It's too difficult to get, all the jobs are nowhere near where I live and apparently making text games for six years, even good ones, makes you a dinosaur because everyone else hates them so much. That's fine. I mean, it sucks -- I wish there was something like Digipen when I was looking for colleges to attend -- but still. I didn't get to play defensive end for the Saints either, and I didn't hang myself.
It seems like you can make some real money out here if you know C#, though, and that's got plenty going for it. I mean, I am hoping to get married and buy a house soonish. (Doing something animation-based has been giving me the desire to self-teach myself the language.)
But yeah, at first I just want to move a guy around a screen who is shooting lasers at another guy on a screen. Or maybe a missile. But I needed some sort of sanity check to ensure that I had installed and configured Visual Studio and DirectX correctly. I hadn't -- not that Microsoft really acknowledges any pitfalls in getting the things setup correctly or anything.
But hey, I'm not married to this C# thing, and I don't presume to really have everything sorted out. My goal is to ultimately get a new job in a fun environment programming in something not so low level -- if you're reading this thinking "MASTER C++ FIRST, JACKASS" then I'm very interested in listening.
