It's true that he used to be the main character modeler / animator for id. As for arrogance, that was the general consensus from people who knew him. He was fired from id during the Carmack vs Carmack power struggle. The report was that he backed John Carmack against Adrian Carmack in what game they were going to make next. (John wanted to do doom 3, Adrian wanted to do another quake game.) The fact that he has had job trouble since then is news to me. AFAIK he totally dissapeared from the internet after he left id. If so it must be because of his personality, because his modeling work was excellent.
He was similar to Chet in many ways: crazy, wrote stuff on the internet attacking people (though he focused on reviewers, not developers), often foul-mouthed. Chet should be looking at him as an example for his own case, not as a past victory. Steed has real talent, and yet is unemployed. I don't know what talent Chet has that Valve is employing him for, but whatever it is he probably could be replaced a lot easier than Steed was. Unless his "talent" is to troll people from other game companies on the internet, thereby distracting other developers from their work and drawing attention away from Valve's actual business. I could see that. |
