So.. what does this mean? That it would make it officially illegal to track a torrent, even if you don't have the actual data file on the tracker? Oh darn, didn't see that coming.

Or are you genuinely this stupid?

It means that, if in a bitter and loveless world this bill passes, fatties will have a case when they sue McDonald's. It means the owners of motels in isolated areas are automatically accessories to crimes committed on their premises. It means that teasing BDR so much that he snaps and shoots someone could blow back on you (for incitement) and the gun manufacturer (for enabling criminal behavior.)

The bill doesn't say any of that, of course. What it says is that Kazaa is committing a criminal act by permitting others to use its services to commit criminal acts. It sounds almost reasonable until you understand that 1. everyone who uses Kazaa and programs like it have to click through that little software contract in which they agree they will not use Kazaa for illegal purposes, and 2. there is almost nothing in the world that can't be used to commit criminal acts. This bill solves this problem like - if a guy uses a carbine to slaughter an entire grade school, and Congress wrote a bill stating not even that guns are illegal, but that gun companies are liable for all damages committed with their products. You have a twofold obscenity in the bill that will result in nothing but witch-hunts and truly unholy lawyers' fees.

Do you understand? It's not a bill that makes music trading illegal, it's a bill that makes writing programs illegal. It's a bill that makes creating software illegal. It can be used to make Photoshop illegal because where would kiddy porn be without Photoshop? It might shut down BitTorrent trackers but it will mainly shut down the guy who wrote BitTorrent. It is a bill which represents a truly insane grasp for power by the music industry. How can you sound so idiotically snide about this? Do you really think it's more important to squeal some variant of "up your butt with a coconut, ha HA!" than to write to your congressman and tell him or her that this bill removes freedoms so new Congress hasn't gotten around to protecting them (and isn't it funny how that works?)
