I never played the first game, but I might check it out if it's anything like the sequel. The interface is smooth yet deep, and the graphics, while probably not on the bleeding edge of technology, are fucking gorgeous. There's definately a learning curve with the whole real-time 3-D micromanagement stuff, but I guess that's what sets this game apart from others in the genre.
There are an unholy numbers of things to be clicking at any time, but not a whole lot of explanation of which might be more useful. Fer instance, do I want two wings of interceptors or one of the Gunship corvettes: lots of bombers or put the resources into ion frigates? Still, I heard mostly positive things about the first game, but that the campaign really forces you to hoard resources over tens of missions (building and conserving your forces) or you'll be fucked at the climax of the game. I sorta felt that way a little in the demo missions, replaying the first mission to change my mix of forces to add another wing of bombers and another resource collector.
The interface seems polished, but I had a lockup in the first mission and a couple of times I got the game into a mode where the keyboard stopped working or mouse clicks did very unexpected things: not sure if I have a sticky key (haven't seen it anywhere else), or if it's interface glitch to be cleared up by release time, or if there's something fundamentally clashing between me and the game.
