Even though we need another liberal jackass like you in the bay area, like we need a whole in the head, I'll throw you some help. Berkeley would be the place for you. San Diego is nice, but Berkeley should be more your speed. Berkeley is so far left that even die hard liberals think most of the people are nuts. Plus you have UC Berkeley, and Telegraph Ave. It's close enough to San Francisco and Oakland, and 45 minutes from San Jose/Silican Valley. Wish OMM old posts were somewhere. Wrote a long post about Berkeley once.
Everywhere in the Bay Area is expensive. As for Oakland, I don't think you can aford the areas you would like to live in. Maybe you can find something in Berkely around the student housing? Berkeley has very stringent rent controls, so you might be able to find something fairly afordable. If not there are some other cities in the area that you might check out. Emeryville, Albany, El Cerrito, and Richmond are all close to Berkeley. There are a lot of other cities I would tell you to check out, but I don't think you could aford them. What's the price range and type of place you're looking for?
What you can do is check some areas out and give me the location. I can tell you what the cities like.
