FRY MY ADAPTER by Choson 08/20/2003, 6:13am PDT
Here's the deal: I brought my MP3 player's AC-DC adapter (input rating AC120V 60Hz 9 W/ output rating DC4.5V 600mA) to Beijing, where I think the sockets are outputting at 240V and 50 Hz. Stupidly, I didn't check until after if this was a universal adapter, which it obviously isn't. Powered the player up, it started for all of two seconds, and then shut down, never to start again.

My question is, have I fried the shit out of the adapter? I know the player's fine, it works under battery power, but seeing as they're rechargeables, the player's useless without a working adapter. Or is this a problem that will suddenly repair itself when I am back on the North American continent, i.e. maybe some switch temporarily tripped when I attempted to use it on a bad voltage/freq socket?

Also, I've got an AC-DC adapter here from a friend that works on Beijing AC input, and has rated output DC4.5V 1A. I've been trawling Google News for a definitive answer, but those places are full of people arguing about whether or not that extra 0.4A is no big deal or if it'll blow the load up. Anyone want to give this one a shot? I have no idea how to tell if it's a "regulated adapter", also.
