So yeah, I built my HL2 box and yes it's really fucking high end.
The point:
the card I had installed in it was the ATI 9800 part and it kicked all the ass. The Catalyst drivers that shipped with the card are rock stead (yes I just said that ATI drivers were rock steady) and with everything on maximum quality, 8X FSAA, full Anisotropic filtering, trilinear etc etc etc... all the games I ran through it smoothly and flawlessly at 1280x1024. A quick sample of games include: GTA:VC, RtCW, Planetside, ST:EF2, BF1942 and the usual shit. Delightful.
So then my gf decides for my birthday to get me (what she was told was) the best video card available, an NVIDIA 5900FX. Holy fuck! Not only could I not tell her that I didn't need the part, I was really intrigued, like everyone else until the 9700pro vs. the 5X00-5800FX debacle I was an ardent supporter of NV and hater of ATI. I really wanted to see how this NV:return of the Jedi card would perform.
First Impressions: Disappointing.
Degradation in overall rendering and glitches all around, GTA:VC stalls at 8x FSAA, weirdness/rendering glitches and jitters on almost all fronts. I installed it late last night and have not had a lot of time to tweak the drivers but jesus fuck for all the reasons that the ATI card kicks ass out of the box this NVIDIA part is sucking ass. (at anything other than Quincunt® antialiasing Crimsonland has so much cursor-lag it is unplayable, the 9800 card was locked in at 8x FSAA and everything was teflon.)
Off to work, later on I will try to tune and get screenshots and benchmarks and then slap the 9800 back in and do the same. I really am disappointed though, subjectively it's really no contest so far. Out of the box the ATI card/drivers chewed through every D3D and GL game with everything turned on and at 1280x1024. With the 5900 every game needs to be caressed into a sweet spot, which still does not render as beautifully at the 9800. I hope I'm wrong and I hope that the Detonator drivers that came with the card need to be upgraded.
So far: NVIDIA can go fuck itself.
More later. |
