What with being confined to quarters as a result of my extended convalescence, I have a lot of time to rent movies. So...
Quiet American
Having recently (re)read Greene's odd but fascinating book, I have to say I really liked this movie. It departed from the book in making a lot of more ambiguous questions definite, but I believe that was a good choice considering the surreal mess an attempt to capture the subtle vagueness of the novel could have been. The primary gripper of the book, the variability in the reader's sympathies depending on where you are in the book and what your initial prejudices towards any Vietnam story are, was transposed immaculately to film. Brendan Fraser is surprisingly good at capturing the disturbing transition from prey to predator and back again, and Michael Caine almost redeems himself for his participation in Miss Congeniality. Plus he gives us all hope that in our old age we can move to Asia and pick up some poontang.
The Recruit
Mostly forgettable, a few good plot twists, and I think I am sick of Pacino playing the same part in all his recent movies. For that matter, all his movies. But, on the whole I give it a solid B-/C+ as a decent rental, although of recent films in the gritty-cop-spy-drama-noire genre, I would place it below NARCS but well above most. |
