I mean, when the last time a C&C game got an expansion that didnt obliterate play balance and replace it with total cheese tactics & units? There's the ballistic sub for the Red Alert expansion, some crap that probably further ruined a crappy to begin with Tiberian Sun, and EVERYTHING in the Yuri's Revenge expansion. Generals was done by the same people who did RA2 and YR? I never would have guessed, because Generals is the most balanced C&C game ever, even more than the original (freaking Mammoth tanks).
Breakdown rant for anyone who plays Generals and cares:
I really wish they'd stop adding a ton of new ways to insta-kill mass amount of infantry in these expansion packs, infantry units in Westwood RTS's have always been pretty close to useless (even in generals that's the case for mid to late game), and they certainly dont need MORE ways to massacre infantry.
A microwave tank that powers down structures...why? Not once while playing the U.S. side did I ever wish for that ability. If you can get tanks into an enemy base, just blow the fuckers up. Against static defenses, those really didnt give the U.S. a problem: gatling cannons are useless against tanks and stinger sites can be sniped or flashbanged easily. Oh wait, microwave tanks also get an area effect infantry killing ability, even though infantry is already useless against the U.S. thanks to flashbangs and snipers, YAY!
A giant chinese helicopter that's essentially an airborne overlord tank that can carry an overlord tank? Jesus christ.
A turtling general, because we all know how exciting turtling is in a RTS game.
A nuke general- This one might be fun if only to piss off the "WTF NO SUPERWEAPONS!" crowd.
An airforce general- Complete with flyboy attitude!!!!!!!!!!
A tank rush general- After years of trying to break away from this strategy.
Little red shoe upgrade to make workers faster- I hope they're joking about this.
Hacker internet center- The whole point of hackers was that they were the only mobile money makers and could be spread out and hidden all over the map. Now they're confined to a building to be useful. yay
"Avenger: This is a vehicle that focuses a beam on a target and allows surrounding tanks and vehicles to double their fire rate." U.S. rocket infantry were already super powerful with this ability, now their TANKS get it too? Jesus.
Sentry drones- Jesus the U.S. already had reconnaissance abilities out the wazoo, do they really need more?
Bunker Busters- Bombs that kill all GLA units hiding in tunnels. The GLA is currently the weakest side in Generals. Now they're adding abilities that hurt them exclusively? Tunnel networks were one of the few advantages the GLA had.
"The Spectre Gunship, which circles overhead firing at multiple targets with a powerful howitzer"- What's the point of Apaches now?
"a reinforcement pad that allows the drop of basic tanks on a timed basis"- They already have this, it's called a supply drop site.
"Planes can also fire flares to confuse anti-air. The flares will be destroyed first before AA will zero-in on the planes." I hope that this will be exclusive for the U.S. raptor, because that thing is useless right now. Chinese migs are the most effective and hardy planes in the game, giving them extra survivability would be stupid.
"a repair pad that allows you to repair vehicles easily in the field"- All the sides already have an ability to repair vehicles in the field, only now the U.S. battle drone will be useless.
