In about two months, I will no longer be hosting these forums by Senor Barborito 07/29/2003, 5:20pm PDT
Boring E/N stuff (you can skip this):
We still have to wait for various departments to dicker over who gets to pay V's salary now, but all the voices up top have nodded in unison - "She is one of our most productive workers, let it be so." regarding her request to transfer to the Boston area. Her own department is facing complete obsolescence inside a year, and two new jobs of roughly equal pay are waiting for her by different departments in the Boston area. Assuming no department involved starts screaming "NO I WILL NOT PLAY ALONG!!!" all of a sudden re: budgeting, the move is effectively going to happen, and going to happen soon - I'm assuming two months, but no date has yet been set by the company.

Hence my request for the car advice. I still have to talk about things to look for when buying a used car with my father the Oracular Mechanic of Myth +100 - and I welcome tips from anyone here who has anything to offer outside of what Consumer Reports told me - but assuming nobody snaps up the Saturn, we're looking to get that in the next few days as well.

After that it comes down to me flying out to Boston to go apartment hunting in one of the outlying areas.

Stuff that affects the forums:
While living out east there is simply no way in Hell we would be able to afford hosting the forums as we do now because of the coast of small-biz lines out there. The lack of Qwest is literally a complete deal-breaker, as sad as that may be. We'll be getting a normal consumer cable modem.

The current plan is to use the savings of dropping our expensive DSL line for a consumer cable line and throw that money, at least for now, into webhosting for Caltrops and the forums. If anyone can offer a business line (read: servers allowed) for Caltrops that's at least 768k up and has above-consumer traffic priority, now would be a good time to post and let us all know. Eventually I'd like the site to become self-sufficient, but eventually I'd like to move to Greenland with all the other non-idiot English-speakers and live in a socialist utopia creating the brainbox. These things have about an equal likelihood of ever occuring.

One final note: ICJ, it would appear that ultimately the new server fell victim to feature-creep. I believe that means I should send you back the HD you were kind enough to provide - would you be so kind as to email me your address? The box with the return address you sent the HD in originally is currently sitting in my gerbils' quite contented stomachs.

Thanks,
--SB
