Sweden's healthcare system is, to the best of my understanding, far more economically efficient than any other socialist healthcare model (Canada's, triply so the UK's, etc.) simply because hospitals with minimal success/turnover get minimal government funding. There are many other socialist programs that DO cost them a significant amount of money, however. Where I think they go wrong is welfare - I believe non-disabled citizens should have to work to eat (which would put me out on the street), but that the government should find jobs for the unemployed who desire one that matches their skillsets (which would negate any being on the street for me).
Incentive doesn't just keep people working hard - it also keeps the system maintainable by ensuring smooth matching between supply/demand. That's where socialism really wins out to begin with, out of course - it trims the fat (or the rape, depending on your connotation preference) from the system and uses the bonus to push the system forward that much harder as a whole. Where things start going sour is when people try to add more principles to the concept than this.
