So I'm pretty much ready to call Charlie Kaufman a genius and the best writer of our time. I haven't seen Human Nature or Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, but I did see Being John Malkovich then Adaptation and now, last night, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and it's an unbelievable string of mind boggling writing.
Mind boggling also is the direction. The movie looked absolutely painful to put together, with the constant turbulence and motion, and as such it was always enjoyable to watch. An experimental film where the experiment yields the polio vaccine and not anything Lars von Trier has attempted. The movie is sci-fi, or more accurately speculative ficition, but like all good genre tales, it's just a new way to tell a story about some people with whom we can all relate. Is that the gayest thing I've ever typed? That's what this movie did to me, it fagged me right up. By the end I was feeling some new emotion, some combination of happy and sad. I think adults call this "bittersweet". I was also nodding like a wise person, "I know, Charlie. I hear you." The movie is that good, but again, I'm still reeling from the thought that it's from the same writer who's already blown my mind twice previously. He has a spell on me. It's the only explanation.
In closing, when you're ready to debate that Charlie Kaufman is NOT a genius or the best writer of our time, never forget that he wrote the synopsis of a movie called "The Three" within Adaptation, and credited it to a parody of every bad writer in Hollywood. Then Identity came out the following year and people LIKED IT. He's so far ahead of the curve, people even enjoy the smell of his shit. |
