Aside from the fact that this movie is WAY WAY GAY, it's simply outstanding. I've pointed out that I'm extremely picky about films I actually BUY on DVD, and I'd actually sort of consider this one maybe. Thankfully my crisis of conscience about buying a Disney film is nicely solved by Veronica who will OF COURSE buy a Johnny Depp movie. Great action, nice plot twists - pity the main one is a bit predictable starting about a third of the way in, good CGI, good everything. Bloom's a bit wooden, but more and more I realize he's a method actor for Boy Scouts which REQUIRES you to be wooden. Considering he probably isn't at all wooden in real life, I'm starting to realize maybe it is just as close to 'good' acting as his roles so far will allow. Depp, of course, gets to have fun with his role and he certainly does.
As for being gay, this movie could not get gayer if it tried - Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom join an almost entirely male cast stuck on mostly navy boats at sea for months and (spoiler) there's a crossdressing scene.
You don't get much gayer short of Caligula or the birdcage (I refuse to capitalize it).
Go see it.
