I haven't played the original AvP but is there a reason why it'd be considered scarier than AvP2? From everything I've read, the AvP2 marine campaign was miles better than the original. The screenshots of AvP haven't convinced me that much either, but I haven't seen it in action.
Never played the original AvP but the AvP2 marine campaign was so bad I started to hallucinate. "Oh look, there some train-tracks. I must follow these tracks through the whole game." Hey, here's the spot that will set off the s00per sk4ry tunnel collapse."
Nothing is more fun than looking at room with 6 doors, and finding out that 5 of those doors are apparently walls with a door painted on them. Later, in the same room, one door will now work but the previous only operable door in the room won't. For no reason.
Some parts are cool, but they have an obnoxious reek of self-satisfied smugness from the designers. "Hah, that pipe has _exactly_ the same shape and texture as an alien's head! Aren't I so cool? I'm so cool. Where's my doughnuts?"
And if I ever have to talk about that FUCKING elevator again someone will have to die.
Now multiplayer, on the other hand, was fun for about month or so. Then the fun of biting people's heads off or merely paralyzing them and running away gives into dawning realization of just how poorly balanced and lame multiplayer actually is. "But T3h Sniper Gunn should always be the most pwoerful w3apon eV4r!2!12!@"
To tangent: Arx Fatalis is another game that just reeks of smugness. Although in that case it's french smugness. But I think it's still worth battering through if only to see the crypt. _That_ had creepy all over it.
