I mentioned that that SS2 scared me for about the first hour or two. That is true. However now that I think about it that's probably because I went into it with the crapload of hype telling me it was the greatest game ever. PC Gamer made it sound like a fucking horror masterpiece (they gave it a 96% and listed it as the 5th or 6th best game of all time) that would make you lose sleep at night. I was frightened just from the anticipation during the training missions, knowing that in a few minutes I was going to experience the pants-shitting horror that everyone on the planet claimed this game would have.
If I had just played this game without any of the hype, I probably would have merely tensed up a bit during the first few zombie wrench-beatings before asking the all-important question "Where's the fun?" and quit.
Seriously though, I can sort of imagine how some people might enjoy this game, but to call it a masterpiece and one of the best games of all time? It's not even one of the top five horror games of all time (Silent Hill, Silent Hill 2, Aliens vs Predator, Resident Evil (original), Thief). Hell, Doom was a scarier FPS than SS2, not to mention having infinately more fun gameplay. The concept is the only thing I'd call great about this game, certainly not the execution. Is the praise for this game just a result of people playing the first 10 minutes, proclaiming its greatness, then biting their tounge when they find out that the rest of the game is tedious so they dont seem foolish? |
