I like how it almost became "Pop Goes the World" in the middle.
My first entry will appear tomorrow sometime. I saw this thread as going on forever, incidentally. Not a one-off. I meant it to be a means to force me to learn Reason. So far I've realized I've bitten off more than I can chew. I don't know how to use half of the shit going on in that program, included really important stuff like... the thing that makes sound. I will not let it stop me, however.

Interesting - they are helpful to a point, but they're suffering from two major problems: #1: they aren't nearly in-depth enough (not surprising), #2: they're not very accurate. In the first article I read ("What Are REX Files?"), the main thrust is that Steinberg created ReCycle! to create a better time-stretching format, and it's great, but you can't use it for anything other than Cubase... and it doesn't support stereo files, only mono. All that is true, except that ReCycle! isn't a Steinberg app (it's by Propellerhead), it DOES support stereo files (v2.0 or newer) and it's usable by Nuendo, Reason and over 2 dozen hardware samplers. So, basically, they're wrong about everything in that article except the name of the filetype.
And don't get me started about their music theory articles.

I liked their analog synthesis article, since i came away from it with an idea on how that shit actually works. Got any links for musical theory (since I have no fucking clue in that area)?

Unfortunately, no. I spent some time this evening looking at several sites, and to a one they all present "guitarist theory" which invariably goes from key signatures to notes to chords to 7th chords to 7b5#9 chords without ever once discussing the idea of counterpoint or the functional relationships between scale degrees and between chords. There are good books on the topic, but short of that you'd probably be better off learning how to play your favorite songs on your own. Those online tutorials are gay. |
